A new fantasy story coming soon that came out of a moment of grief and sorrow

“A Maker of Magic” by Mark Piggott (from Franklin Publishers)

So, I have a new fantasy story coming out this spring, but there’s a bit of a back story I want to share first before I tell you more about the book. It all began about two years ago, in December of 2024. I just got back from my vacation in Quebec, Canada. It was Christmas Eve, and I got a phone call from my brother. My Dad was in the hospital and he was not breathing on his own. I needed to get home to New Jersey ASAP. I drove from Alexandria, VA, to Phillipsburg, NJ, as fast as I could. Although it was Christmas Eve it was not a night of joy or celebration for me. Before the night was over, my father passed away. He was 88 years old.

For the next four months, I spent every other week traveling between Virginia and New Jersey, dealing with funeral arrangements, taking care of my mother, planning for her future care, etc. So, I was teleworking with my regular job during the day and spending my nights doing what any writer would do when sitting in a big empty house filled with memories, pain, sorrow, and guilt from more than fifty years of family life. I sat down at the kitchen table with my laptop and I started writing. I poured the emotions of those months into a story that had started to form into my head. I don’t know if it came from all the grief I was feeling or perhaps from the love of my family supporting me in that moment. I can honestly tell you there was a lot going on at that time, so it was probably a little of both. Needless to say, I poured my heart and soul into this book.

I don’t want to go into the story just yet. However, I can tell you that a major character in this novel was the father, and I think I saw a lot of my own father in the father figure within this story. My Dad was a U.S. Marine, serving two tours in Vietnam, raising a family, including his two sons who both served in the military (my brother was a Marine, and I served in the Navy). The father in my novel was a former military officer too, teaching his sons how to be soldiers in a time of war. He did it by example, through leadership, strength, love, discipline and hands-on training to make his sons better than him. I wanted to instill that same feeling I got from my father into these characters.

But behind it all, there is also a love story. This is a deep, soul-searching love that transcends time, distance, and separation. This part of the story imitated the many years I spent apart from my wife on deployment with the Navy. I think we spent more time away than together in our first ten years of marriage, and yet we’re still together after over forty years. We share a bond that’s so deep that a simple touch, a song, or a picture brings us together even though we’re miles apart. I also think of my parents, who were married for over sixty five years but spent time apart in overseas deployments, too. That kind of love is rare to carry on for so long. Its the inspiration I found to fill within the pages of my story.

The same goes for the villains behind the scenes. I normally use the standard fantasy trope villains in evil wizards, devious nobles, demons, goblins, etc., in my stories. You know, the regular fantasy villains you’ll find in any D&D campaign. However, this was my first time dipping my toe into a darker vibe, a more horror themed villain. I wanted to really dive into the darkness within my soul, maybe because I was in such a dark place when I wrote this story, so much so that I dipped into the shadows with vampires, ghouls, zombies, and other creatures of the night. These were the monsters of my childhood that haunted me, the ones my father was always there to protect me from. I think that’s why I chose them as the monsters of this story. It’s full blood and gore, something I’ve never done before but it seemed necessary for this story. I felt a lot of despair and loss and I wanted to evoke that in this story.

I don’t want to go into much more detail about the story just yet, except for the teaser image from the cover of the two MCs, the Blademancer and the Enchanter. Sorry, no more spoilers, not yet. A Maker of Magic, coming soon from Franklin Publishers, so stay tuned here for more information! I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Being an independent author in 2026 compared to 2009 is no walk in the park

You wouldn’t know it by looking at me, but my first book was published in 2009, and it looks nothing like it does today. Forever Avalon was published by James A. Rock Publishing in 2009. They were a vanity press (I didn’t know better at the time, so sue me) that actually went out of business a few years later. At the time, I was just excited to be a published author. My first book signing was at a Borders Books (yes, and they’re another company that went out of business, no coincidence there), and most of the books I sold that day went to family and friends. It was surreal at the time, and as I look at that picture, I have to wonder if I knew what the future held for me.

It’s been fifteen years, and in that time I’ve published 1o books, five self-published, five with Curious Corvid Publishing, with more to come. It’s been a roller coaster of money spent, money earned (more spent than earned), and running from event to festival to convention to try to make a name for myself. It’s one thing when you’re 48 years old (like I was in this picture), but I’m 63 this year. That’s a big difference.

I honestly don’t think you are ever prepared for magnitude of everything involved, from hiring editors, artists, beta readers and marketing experts along the way. Then there’s all the supplies needed, from bookmarks, signs, table runners, canopies (for outdoor events) as well as ensuring you have enough books from one event to the next. Finding those events year to year is another task that has grown in volume. I have to admit, the growth of the internet has made my life easier. I mean, in 2009, social media was still at its infancy. I didn’t start this website until around 2014. Everything has exploded for independent authors since then.

If I were already retired and able to do my “indie author” gig full-time, but that’s not the case. I’m still a few years away from that. If one of my books takes off, that might change things, but for now, I just keep plugging away. I have cut back on some of my events, focusing more on book festivals and steampunk/fantasy conventions instead of the larger comic/anime conventions that are too broad for indie authors like me. Additionally, thanks to my involvement with the Northern Virginia Writers Club, I’ve been able to get into bookstores in the DMV through the organization’s contacts. It makes it easier for an indie author trying to get a foot in the door at major book stores like Barnes & Noble. Check out my Events page for a complete listing of my 2026 book signings, festivals, and conventions.

Honestly, there is no big learning curve. I think every indie author needs to go through this to get their feet wet and understand the system so they know what to expect. It’s not easy being an independent author. There is no multi-million dollar contract, signing bonus, or living off your royalties like Stephen King. When you look at the history of authors and how they started, we’re in good company (in the long run). Let’s just see how it goes.

Kirkus Book Review of Corsair says “a diverting SF romp with touchpoints of Victorian/Edwardian history!”

I got a couple of early Christmas gifts this week. First, the government shutdown ended so I am back to work in my regular full time job (yeah!) although I did take that time to really focus on my writing (more to come on that later). Second, Kirkus Reviews provided a top level book review of my steampunk historical fiction Corsair and the Sky Pirates. Kirkus Reviews is an American book review magazine founded in 1933 by Virginia Kirkus. The magazine’s publisher, Kirkus Media, is headquartered in New York City. Kirkus Reviews confers the annual Kirkus Prize to authors of fiction, nonfiction, and young readers’ literature.

I appreciate honest reviews that focuses on the story, not every little technical aspect that some reviewers nitpick at. It means they really took the time to read my book and understand what I was trying to convey in my story.

“The author envisions an epochal meeting in the late 19th century between visionary author Jules Verne and young inventor Nikola Tesla to pool their ideas and create mechanistic miracles made possible by an alien element (“Uriel”) found in fragments shed by a passing comet that provides a seemingly inexhaustible power source. Now, in 1907, a transformed Earth’s skies are crisscrossed by airships, and there are steam-power-armored warriors, cybernetic limbs, punch-card “Thinking Machines,” and other steam- and battery-based technological wonders. The ruthless and amoral Thomas Edison leads a cabal of industrial elites who want to rule the world absolutely—and possibly incite a global Great War between Germany, Britain, and France to bring this about. Opposing them are Tesla’s “Vernians,” among them a flying fleet of rogues tagged as “pirates” (though a Robin Hood comparison is more apt).”

Kirkus Review of Corsair and the Sky Pirates, Published November 17, 2026

You can read the entire book review online at Kirkus Reviews. Corsair and the Sky Pirates is available online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and at Curious Corvid Publishing online shop. Remember, give the gift of steampunk this holiday season!

Corsair soars to new heights thanks to new readers and a Literary Titan

I regularly talk about soaring to the skies with my steampunk historical fiction, Corsair and the Sky Pirates, but it’s different when it happens on its own. I met so many people at events in 2025, and Corsair was one of my best sellers. People were enthralled by the swashbuckling adventures of Corsair and his crew of sky pirates as they fight for Nikola Tesla’s dream against the corporate tyranny of Thomas Edison’s ERP Corporation.

The most significant boost came from Literary Titan, which published a phenomenal review of Corsair online. They dove into the depths of my steampunk novel and brought incredible fanfare that I was not expecting. I can honestly tell you, this was one of the most humbling book reviews I have ever received.

From the first page, Corsair and the Sky Pirates drops you straight into a swirl of history, imagination, and high-flying adventure. It starts with Jules Verne and Nikola Tesla in a café in France, dreaming up impossible machines and strange new power sources. That meeting sparks a chain of events that explodes into a world of airships, sky pirates, secret plots, and the dangerous lure of comet fragments with world-changing energy. At the center of it all is Corsair, a rogue pirate who’s as much a freedom fighter as he is a thief, and his diverse crew of outcasts who take on empires, corporations, and tyrants in an age where science blurs into fantasy.

I found myself grinning at how much fun the writing is. The prose is quick, like a stage play mixed with pulp adventure, and it leans hard into spectacle. The characters are bold and colorful, each with their quirks, backstories, and weapons that are almost as wild as their personalities. There were moments where I rolled my eyes at how dramatic some scenes were, but I also loved it. It felt like the book knew it was larger than life and leaned all the way into that spirit. I kept turning pages because I wanted to see what trick or twist would come next.

At the same time, the ideas underneath the adventure stuck with me. There’s a real push and pull between invention for progress and invention for profit. The way the story frames Edison, Tesla, and ERP as forces shaping the world gave me something to chew on between the swashbuckling fights. I felt frustrated at the greed and cruelty shown by the corporate powers, and I rooted for Corsair even when his choices were brutal. The story isn’t subtle, but sometimes that’s the point. It makes its villains nasty, its heroes daring, and its stakes almost absurdly high, and that gave me the freedom to just sink into the ride.

When I closed the book, I thought about who would enjoy it most. If you like steampunk worlds, if you enjoy a good pirate tale with a twist of history and a lot of flair, or if you just want to escape into something that’s fun, fast, and fearless, this book will be right up your alley. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants adventure with heart and a lot of imagination.

Thanks to Literary Titan for recognizing the heart and soul of Corsair and the Sky Pirates. Suppose you’re interested in obtaining a signed copy of my award-winning steampunk historical fiction. In that case, I will be at Barnes & Noble, located at One Loudoun in Ashburn, VA, on Saturday, October 12, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Additionally, don’t forget 2nd Sundays Williamsburg on Sunday, October 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on N. Boundary Street in historic Williamsburg, VA.

Get ready for my next audiobook as The Dark Tides is in production for 2025

The next novel to get the audiobook treatment is currently in production. The Dark Tides: Book Two of the Forever Avalon Series will soon be available on Audible and iTunes as the story of the MoonDrake families adventures on Avalon continues. Narrator Daryl Gannon (IG @darylgannonart) is using his unique vocal talents to tell the story about the resurrection of Morgana le Fay and her plot to destroy Avalon through her final and most powerful dark spell—The Dark Tides.

The Drake family has known more than its share of tragedy at sea. After the devastating and mysterious loss of their patriarch, Bryan, to a strange storm, his grieving wife and children sail to his last known location to lay a wreath in his honor. They are caught in a storm freakishly similar to the one that took Bryan from them. A funeral becomes a joyous reunion, as they find him alive and well but equally stranded on the mysterious island of Avalon, where the descendants of King Arthur rule a world filled with knights, Elves, Dwarves . . . and magic!

Lord Bryan MoonDrake-as he is now known-has attained the rank of the Gil-Gamesh, protector of the realm. He helps his wife and two of his children build new lives in a medieval society. His daughter Ashley has returned to Avalon with wonderful news. Bryan sees an opportunity to bring his family back together at last, so they plan a grand Avalonian wedding for Ashley and her true love, Andrew.

But all is not well in the kingdom. Dark forces arise to fulfill a prophecy to resurrect Morgana le Fay, the most powerful sorceress in the history of Avalon. If successful, she will unleash the Dark Tides to destroy the line of Pendragon once and for all. To save his family, his new home, and his king, can the Gil-Gamesh overcome incredible odds and powers beyond his comprehension to rid Avalon of Morgana’s evil forever?

Here is a short video clip as a preview of what’s to come in 2025, and make sure you follow Daryl on IG.

Only a week away until the release of The Prometheus Engine from Curious Corvid

The Prometheus Engine: Book Four of the Forever Avalon Series releases December 1 from Curious Corvid Publishing.

“Fear helps keep the people in line, submissive and compliant,” Blackstone argued.
“It also takes away the one thing people yearn for—freedom! The desire for freedom creates longing, which leads to dissent and chaos. We should tread lightly here, brother, so support and loyalty to the crown do not waiver.”
— Excerpt from The Prometheus Engine: Book Four of the Forever Avalon Series

Five years have passed since the reclamation of Avalon, restoring the barrier protecting the island from the outside world, but at a terrible cost. The spell of first magic split the island of eternal magic into an archipelago, a land separated by the sea and evil. Mordred the Immortal, the bastard son of King Arthur Pendragon, took control of Avalon. His coup was swift and brutal, taking advantage of the chaos after the reclamation by murdering the Lords of Avalon. With the heirs of the nobles under his thrall, Mordred reigns over the shattered land, but not without consequences.

His reign is opposed by the “three dragons” — the children of Lord Bryan MoonDrake, the Gil-Gamesh and Knight Eternal of Avalon. After their father died during Mordred’s coup, the three started a rebellion to end the immortal king’s reign. They support the true king of Avalon, Bowen Pendragon, the boy king. With the help of the Holy Order of Shield Maidens and the Hîldrägo Boquè, an elite corps of Elven fighters, the resistance slowly picks away at Mordred’s reign, one island at a time.

However, deep beneath the streets of New Camelot, Mordred utilizes the genius of gnome mechanics to build an unimaginable threat — The Prometheus Engine. This ancient machine once destroyed the great city of Atlantis and now Mordred is attempting to bring this monstrosity to life once more. The exact nature of the engine is unknown, forcing the resistance to do the impossible. They must commune with the one person who knows the sordid history of the Prometheus Engine — the spirit of King Arthur Pendragon.

This book has been more than five years in the making. I have endeavored to bridge the original trilogy into the next chapter to bring the story to a close. This book has a darker tone from the previous as we delve into a new Avalon under the reign of Mordred the Immortal. If you thought Morgana le Fay was evil, she cannot hold a candle to her wayward son. His ambition and decadence was fueled over the centuries his soul was trapped with Dusk, the soul reaper of the Gil-Gamesh. I hoped to convey that aspect within this story.

I also wanted to bring a spot of redemption for characters like Eileanora, the Dubh Bhean, Assassin of the Elves, and Keane Foley, the master thief. In a land threatened by Mordred’s evil, even those who tread in the darkness find a way to step into the light. I wanted to show that even in the dark, you can find your way out through the light of hope and love.

If you are invested in my first trilogy, I hope you will join me at the saga continues in The Prometheus Engine: Book Four of the Forever Avalon Series, coming December 1 from Curious Corvid Publishing. Pre-order NOW at the Curious Corvid Shop.

The Reign of Mordred the Immortal continues in The Prometheus Engine

The Forever Avalon Series continues as the Reign of Mordred the Immortal brings darkness and despair while seeking to unlock the power of The Prometheus Engine.

It’s time. The saga of the MoonDrake family on Avalon continues with the upcoming release of The Prometheus Engine: Book Four of the Forever Avalon Series. It’s been several years since I finished the original trilogy, and it’s time for the story to continue. I put it off for some time as my mind traveled into other realms and new stories, but now is the time to bring the story to a close.

For those who don’t know me, Forever Avalon was my first book to be published. I began writing during my last deployment in 2001 aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65). After several years of rejections and waiting, it was finally published in 2009. It has been the rock of storytelling for me as an independent author. When people ask me which book is my favorite, I usually flinch at answering that question, but I can honestly say it will always be Forever Avalon. It was my first, and you always remember your first.

The Prometheus Engine continues the story of the resistance against Mordred the Immortal after he usurped the throne of Avalon. With the death of their father, the children of the Gil-Gamesh have risen up to take arms and lead an open rebellion against Mordred’s reign.

Five years have passed since Avalon suddenly returned to the real world and faced the loss of magic and an invasion by the modern, technological might of the United States and Russia. Only through the efforts of the Gil-Gamesh, Lord Bryan MoonDrake, along with great sacrifice by the Elves of Alfheimer, did Avalon disappear from the world once again. However, that victory came at a high cost.

Avalon tore asunder, an island shattered into an archipelago. Mordred, the immortal bastard child of Morgana le Fay, usurped the throne from the boy King, Bowen Pendragon, at this moment of weakness. With an army of undead wraith knights at his command and the new Lords of Avalon by his side, it was child’s play for Mordred to take the Granite Throne and become King.

The only thing standing in his way of total domination are the children of the Gil-Gamesh:  Hunter, Rose, and Ashley. Since their father’s death during Avalon’s Reclamation, these three have resisted Mordred’s reign at every turn from their new home in the ruined city of Alfheimer. Along with the Holy Order of Shield Maidens and the Hîldrägo Boquè, an elite corps of Elven warriors, they fight to reclaim King Bowen’s throne and restore Avalon to the people.

But even now, Mordred schemes to bring down the resistance by constructing an ancient magical artifact—The Prometheus Engine. Only the immortal King knows its secrets and the power it will bring him, no matter the cost. Even now, Hunter and his sisters race across the archipelago to uncover the engine’s secrets and discover the truth behind Avalon’s devastation.

The cover reveal (and it’s a fantastic book cover by Emily’s World of Design) will happen on October 15th when the pre-orders open! Get ready for The Prometheus Engine, coming December 1 from Curious Corvid Publishing.

Help Corsair and the Sky Pirates go Hollywood

Corsair and the Sky Pirates steampunk adventure, available from Curious Corvid Publishing.

Who would like to see Corsair and the Sky Pirates on the big (or little) screen? I know I would. That’s why I teamed up with Option Avenue to get my book out there for just such an opportunity. Option Avenue connects Producers and Authors to bring captivating stories to life on the big screen. I recently did an interview with David Levine Bramante, CEO and co-founder of Option Avenue, about Corsair and the story behind it. Check it out on my steampunk novel’s Option Avenue page or watch the video below.

A brilliant inventor . . . A prolific writer . . . A chance meeting between Nikola Tesla and Jules Verne created a world you could never imagine. A world powered by steam generated not from coal or fuel but from a meteor fragment. Tesla discovered a comet named Uriel was raining pieces of these powerful meteorites across the globe whenever it passed near the Earth. That led to an Industrial Revolution years ahead of its time—a steampunk revolution—but even progress had a price. While the rich and powerful lived in luxury in this industrial new world, the everyday people groveled beneath the boot of their corporate masters.

One man brought hope to the people as he pursued Tesla’s dream. His exploits were legendary, his crew infamous, and his airship a vision of the future. Corsair and his Sky Pirates flew across the globe, carrying out deeds that spurred the imagination. Known as modern-day Robin Hood bandits, they stole from the robber barons and returned the spoils to the oppressed. The swashbuckling Corsair was as handsome as he was cool, calm, and calculating. His crew was a diverse assortment of renegades many authorities considered lowlifes and criminals. Still, they were all dedicated to Corsair’s mission, working with Tesla to end the corporate rule strangling the planet.

Pick up your copy of Corsair and the Sky Pirates at  Amazon or the Curious Corvid Shop or get a signed copy at one of my future Events. In the meantime, help get the word out about Corsair and Option Avenue.
