The Magus were legendary magic casters/warriors, able to cast spells and wield powerful magical weapons. They were the guardians of magic in Attlain but were cast out and feared for their power. Marcus Gideon was trained by The Last Magus, destined to restore the dignity of the order.

After graduating from the Basilon Magical Academy, Gideon sets off for his master’s homeland. Plodoro was an isolated city in the far north of the Skjem-Tur mountains. Surrounded by giants and blanketed in an endless winter, Gideon traveled to the far-flung region to fulfill a final request of his master and return a sacred weapon to his people. The First Princess of Attlain fell in love with Gideon during their time at Basilon. Now, to win her parents’ approval, Gideon must win the Helios Arcanum Magical Arts Festival. AI-generated art is an excellent way for authors to express themselves and their characters

I know this is a taboo subject, especially among artists and publishers. AI has always been that forbidden area you only think about when you watch “The Terminator” for the thousandth time. However, it has become a new reality, especially for writing and art. You can get a term paper, short story, or even a complete manuscript by AI nowadays. Even some book contests ask if your cover art was created by an artist or AI, and the latter can get you disqualified.

I am against forgoing creativity for something computer-generated, but I have found it a great way to bring my characters to life. I don’t think there’s an author out there who wouldn’t want to see their book on the big screen or television. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime that most independent authors will never get. So, using AI to bring my characters into a realistic look helps me create my stories and visualize them in a way I could never do.

My son introduced me to an AI generator called perchance.org. It takes a fundamental character description and turns it into AI-generated art. I wanted to see how good it was, so I started playing with it to recreate the characters from my award-winning steampunk novel Corsair and the Sky Pirates from Curious Corvid Publishing. It took many tries to get used to how the algorithm worked, but I finally got the hang of it, and these are the results.

Corsair and the crew of the airship Galeru appeared as I imagined them. The steampunk stylings of the AI were a bit redundant, but when appropriately coaxed, it came through. It also imagined a perfect Nikola Tesla in his brave new steampunk world. I will admit I kept it in an anime style because that is my favorite art style for anything fantasy-related.

Tesla’s other sky pirate captains came out with their own unique flair. They are a mix of actual historical figures (Betsy Coleman, Pancho Villa, and Colonel Sam Cody) with a few of my creations. However, adding the unmistakable steampunk twist is a fun take on these infamous sky pirates.

Lastly, the villains of the story. It was easy to create a Thomas Edison in all his glory. Even the villainous shade Penelope Putnam came out beautiful and deadly through the AI program. But I must admit, I love how the program designed Duke McTavish. The Irish brawler looks perfectly menacing, as he should be.

I will admit this was an experiment for me to see how good AI-generated art can be. It is fun to play with but not something I will use regularly. I have many artists that I rely on for the artwork in my books. That is something I will continue to do no matter what. The potential of what AI can do is there, but it still takes the human imagination to bring those characters to life.

Supporting High School Art Programs with my NEW YA Fantasy in 2024

Before I get into my post, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year! I am about to embark on a Christmas vacation, my first in years, as my wife and I are off to Quebec, Canada, for a long overdue holiday. I will be absent from my social media and other online postings during my vacation, save for the occasional holiday selfie with Santa Claus. Now, on to other things . . .

Example of interior chapter art for Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle, designed by art students from Phillipsburg High School, Phillipsburg, NJ.

I had an idea that came to a beautiful fruition. In high school, I was an art student. I wanted to be a graphic artist, maybe the next Jack Kirby, but I could never get it perfect. I pursue other avenues, hence being a writer instead of an artist. However, I wanted to give back to my alma mater and the future artists currently studying there. That’s when it struck me like a lightning bolt.

I have a new book coming out in 2024, my first Young Adult (YA) fantasy, Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle. I wrote this book because I have great nieces and nephews who are becoming avid readers, and I want to write something they can read without question of parental content (hence, no spicy content). So, after writing the book, I thought what better way to kick off my first YA series is by having more young adults create the art for the book.

During my visit to my alma mater, Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg, NJ, for their annual comic-con, I saw some exceptional talent on display. After speaking with the teachers, we devised a plan to have the students draw the interior chapter art for my new book. I recently visited the school, got to speak to the book club and English classes, and saw firsthand the fruits of their labors.

You can see a selection of some of the finished art above. These young men and women are incredibly talented, and I am proud to support them by publishing them. They will spend the next few months finishing up the rest of the art in preparation for an early summer release for Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle. Once I get parental permission, I will update this post with more images, photos, and all the students’ names.

Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle takes you to the town of Camelot Cove, a quiet village on the shores of Lake Superior in Upper Michigan. Most people know Camelot Cove as a fishing town, but this sleepy little community has a secret. Camelot Cove is the home of the Fae—magical beings from myth and legend. They were brought together in this out-of-the-way place by Merlin and the Lady of the Lake under the protection of the Pendragon. The power of the Pendragon has passed from generation to generation as the guardian of the Fae for centuries. That power now waits to be passed to the next descendant of King Arthur. She is Gwen Iver, a fifteen-year-old girl starting her first day of high school. Surrounded by friends and facing off against her rivals, Gwen was about to begin a journey into a magical world of infinite possibilities.

I wanted to give back to my hometown, my high school, and the students whose imagination and talent will carry on into the future. You should return the blessings to the community that raised you and molded you into who you are today. This is my way of passing the torch to the next generation of artists and dreamers.

Are you naughty or nice? Here comes the steampunk Santa Claus

From Ravven White, founder and COO of Curious Corvid Publishing

I’m excited to announce December’s release: The Last Magus; Dragonfire and Steel from award winning author Mark Piggott.

Mark was one of our first early authors and he came with an already established series, loads of self-published books and numerous awards. To say I was intimidated was an understatement. Was I even qualified to publish him when he was already blazing his path? Mark thought so. He’s been a huge supporter of our house since he joined and he is forever patient and kind.

I think one of things I appreciate most about Mark is his desire to always do better. With each new work he’s creating, Mark strives to be inclusive and caring and learn how to incorporate experiences outside of his own. And if you don’t know Mark, here’s a little bit about him:

Mark Piggott, a native of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1982, beginning a 23-year career. He served on four aircraft carriers and various duty stations as a Navy Journalist before he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He retired from active duty in 2006. Mark currently works as a writer-editor for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He and his wife, Georgiene, reside in Alexandria, Virginia. They have three children.

Mark has lived a prolific life and continues to do so, from the books he is constantly writing, to the many, many events he dedicates his time to.

So, without further ado, here’s the blurb for Mark’s latest book:

He must finish this task to return to his true love, Wren.

The First Princess of Attlain fell in love with Gideon during their time at Basilon. Now, to win her parents’ approval, Gideon must win the Helios Arcanum Magical Arts Festival. This celebration showcases the best magic casters in Attlain, and Gideon is the first Magus to compete in over a hundred years. As he fights for his life and reputation, a dark shadow looms over him as the Ulbrecht Domo―the Shadow Lord of Ishtar―has other plans for The Last Magus.

CHILLS.

I’m super excited for you all to read this exciting new novel. It’s truly a fun read and perfect for any lover of scifi and fantasy.

You can pre-order The Last Magus: Dragonfire and Steel right here, right NOW!

High praise from my publisher! I never realized how much of an impact I made on our small press until I read this from Ravven on SubStack. It humbles an author to know they made a difference with them as they did with me. Thank you Ravven and Curious Corvid for giving this rambling old author a voice.

Adding Short Stories and Fan Fiction to the menu

I’ve had my Fan Fiction page up and running for some time now, but I decided to finally include some of my short stories in there. There are stories for contest that I’ve entered, some won, others did not, but I wanted to be able to share them with all of you.

These are stories that mean a lot to me and come from both my imagination and my heart. They were not just written for competition but rather inspired by a heartfelt twang. For example, I wrote The Clock Tower after my sister passed away two years ago. My niece took her death very hard, so I wanted to immortalize her in my writing. My sister loved Disney World so I turned her into a princess in her own magical kingdom. It’s an adventure in itself.

The Chalice came from a nightmare I had. I woke up one night after dreaming of being attacked by a witch in a dark alleyway. This was my first venture into horror, not something I’m used to writing, but I needed to do this to purge myself of this nightmare.

The last one, The Moonlit Black Cat Tavern, came from not only a dream but an idea. What if there were a place where monsters, humans, and demi-humans could come together and work out their differences? I worked from that idea into a fun like any Dungeons and Dragons campaign.

There’s also a link to all the fun Log Horizon anime fan fiction I wrote last year. I binged on the third season of that anime and it inspired me to write my own fan fiction based on the characters and story.

I will be adding new short stories as they come along so please take a look and read them. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them.

Summertime Blues sometimes equals Writers Block

When the sun is high in the sky, the days are longer and the air is thick with humidity. All the while, the cool waters of the beach or swimming pool are calling you, what is a writer supposed to do? Sure, I can sit inside my air conditioned apartment and bang away at my keyboard, ignoring the possibilities of fun in the sun, but why? The oppressive heat and constant “air quality alerts” make going outside next to impossible. Still, it also makes it impossible to concentrate on writing.

Writer’s block is real! I’ve written maybe ten pages or less in the past month. It’s been hard to be inspired right now, especially after back surgery. It’s bad enough to sit behind my desk for my regular job, trying to keep moving to relieve pain in my back and legs. Then, sitting at night or on the weekends and writing is even harder. Plus, the heavy pain medications they have me on don’t help, either.

I’ve experienced writer’s block on more than one occasion. We are old friends and adversaries. We have dueled on the battlefield repeatedly, trading barbs and deleting poorly written sentences. Our conflicts have been bitter, nasty, and sometimes lasting for months or years. The struggle for The Dark Tides of 2012 still haunts me to this very day.

I still don’t have a cure for the evil of writer’s block. I’ve never been able to put it entirely behind me. All I can do is work through it or wait it out. Writer’s block is as unforgiving as a glacier moving through a chasm . . . slow and unrelenting. If you think about banging your head repeatedly into the wall, and never stop no matter how painful, that’s writer’s block.

All I can do is take it slow and work through the problems. I always say, “Writing a few sentences daily is progress in the right direction.” Keep doing that, and by the fall, I’ll have finished the chapter. Then, when cooler weather kicks in, and I’m feeling more like myself, with a pumpkin spice latte in hand, the words will start to flow again.

In the meantime, stay inside, and check out my Events page for upcoming book sales and conventions you can find me at.
