Releasing June 20! Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle gets its first book award of 2024

I love a release party! Get ready for my first YA fantasy, Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle, from Curious Corvid Publishing releasing this week, June 20! And, the icing on the cake, I received my first book award for my new novel. Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle was honored with the Golden Wizard Children’s Book Award for 2024.

The Golden Wizard Book Prize is renowned as the top children’s book awards program globally committed to supporting talented authors who possess the ability to weave words into spells, creating stories that inspire and uplift young readers.

GWEN IVER & PENDRAGON’S PUZZLE takes you to the town of Camelot Cove, a quiet village on the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Most people know it as a fishing town, but this sleepy little community has a secret. Camelot Cove is the home of the Fae—magical beings from myth and legend. From mermaids, dryads, and centaurs to ogres, elves, and dwarves, the community is a mixture of humans and Fae. They were brought together in this out-of-the-way place by the wizard Merlin and the mysterious Lady of the Lake under the protection of the Pendragon.

The power of the Pendragon has passed from generation to generation through the descendants of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. That power now waits to be passed to the next descendant to continue the legacy as the protector of the Fae.

Gwen Iver is a fifteen-year-old girl starting her first day of high school. Surrounded by friends and facing off against her rivals, including Morgan Moor and her infamous Dreadmoor Gang, Gwen’s idyllic life is about to be turned upside-down. She begins a journey into a magical world of infinite possibilities when she attempts to unlock PENDRAGON’S PUZZLE.

Thank you to Ravven White and Curious Corvid Publishing for their continued support of this independent author. I am so happy to have a voice through their love, advice, and editing. I also want to thank the art students and teachers at my alma mater, Phillipsburg High School, for contributing to the art of my novel. It was inspiring to work with these talented artists. Lastly, I dedicated this book to my great nieces and nephews, the future readers that inspired me to write this story. My family is the reason I continue on my journey as an author. I could not do this without them.

You can pre-order your copy of Gwen Iver and Pendragon’s Puzzle at Curious Corvid Publishing Shop or grab a signed copy at one of my many book signing events this summer. I hope to see you there.

Continue with the Tales from Across the River of Souls in a Dirge for the Lord Marshal

It is strange how a simple story can carry you beyond what you first imagined. When I wrote The River of Souls, it was a simple story, a novella, that inspired me to combine a fantasy story with poetry. It was a novel idea, especially for someone like me, and it got my foot in the door with Curious Corvid Publishing. For that I will forever be grateful. I have not dabbled in poetry since high school, and I can honestly say I was not very good at it. Thank goodness for the poets I work with today to add to my fantasy writings.

But this story would not let me go. I loved the romance between Malcolm and Alyssa. Their love affair touched me more than the couples I created through my writings. I consider them soulmates, two people brought together from across the universe, a love in perfect harmony. I find myself akin to it, having been married to my beautiful wife for 40 years. She is my soulmate and gives me consistent inspiration within my writings.

My first journey into Tales from Across the River of Souls was A Mother’s Love—A River of Souls Story, and now the story continues in Dirge for the Lord Marshal—A River of Souls Story. This next foray includes a poem from my fellow Curious Corvid author, Aimee Nicole. The story revolves around the death of Sir Aleister Cornwall, Lord Marshal of Fairhaven, and the search for a replacement. It also introduces a terrorist group within Fawleen trying to rekindle the Endless War.

2024 Book Tour is underway and I am psyched to meet more readers this year

I am excited to kick off my 2024 book tour with my first event, the Williamsburg Book Festival in Historic Williamsburg, VA. This event was great, and I would highly recommend it to any authors living in or near Hampton Roads. We had a great reception, myriad genres for people to choose from, and a chance to network with other authors and publishers for future events. We’re talking about potential author events at festivals, new brewery and distillery events, and new book festivals. This is a great time to be an independent author trying to make a name for themselves. The opportunities are endless. You must find them and get your feet wet in the river of possibilities!

So, what’s next for me? Well, you can find all my upcoming events listed on my Events page, but if you decide not to follow the link, let me tell you about it. Next is Awesome-Con, the biggest comic-con for Washington, D.C. (next to the clowns in Congress) March 8-10. First, the guest line-up is impressive (Hayden Christensen, Rosario Dawson, and Charlie Cox, to name a few). Then, it’s three days of pure, unadulterated geekdom, cosplayers, celebrities, and vendors. You can find me on Author’s Lane, B-24, to pick up one of my many fantasy and steampunk books, signed, of course. Visit awesome-con.com for more information.

We kick off April with two events, including the Annapolis Comic-Con at the Byzantium Center on Saturday, April 6, from 10am to 4pm. This is my first time attending this event, but I have had a great experience with the Southern Maryland Comic-Cons. I love these small cons for their intimate surroundings and small-town vibe. Plus, as a Navy Veteran, I can’t help but love the idea of going into the home of the U.S. Naval Academy. Visit mdcomiccons.com for more information.

My other April event is the kick-off to spring at 2nd Sundays Williamsburg, on Sunday, April 14, from 11am to 5pm, celebrating 20 years of bringing arts and music to Historic Williamsburg, Va. This is my first date for the 2024 season on North Beauregard Street, but the people of Williamsburg and the many visitors to this colonial town never disappoint. This is the first of several 2nd Sunday events I will be participating in this year. Visit 2ndSundaysWilliamsburg.com for a list of all the vendors and more information.

As always, I hope you will take the opportunity to dive into my fantastic imagination and read my carefully woven stories of fantasy and steampunk adventures. Head over to Buy My Books if you want to read more or visit my Events page to meet me at an upcoming festival or convention!

Two peer reviews of Corsair and The Last Magus

Corsair and the Sky Pirates and The Last Magus: Dragonfire and Steel available from Curious Corvid Publishing.

I genuinely feel appreciated for the work I put into a book when I get peer reviews. These are people in my craft who understand what it means to be a writer and provides the necessary feedback that I want and need. Any independent author worth their salt will tell you how important it is to hear from both readers and peers.

The first one comes from bookexcellence.com for Corsair and the Sky Pirates. I submitted my steampunk novel to them last year and finally got some feedback from them.

“In the wake of an encounter between Tesla and Verne, meteor fragments from the celestial wanderer, Uriel, become the catalyst for a revolutionary energy source, replacing conventional combustion engines with the mesmerizing power of steam. Thus, a steampunk revolution is born, an industrial evolution propelled by the genius of these two visionaries. Yet, not all is utopian in this new age of progress. Thomas Edison’s ERP Corporation, fueled by ambition and influence, sought to capitalize on these advancements, ensuring that every marvel of modernity came at a price. While Tesla’s inventions were intended to alleviate the burdens of everyday life, Edison’s corporate juggernaut sought to exploit them for profit. Amidst this clash of ideals, one man emerged to represent the common folk. He took up the mantle of Tesla’s dream, dedicating his life to bringing the wonders of invention to the masses. His name echoed through the corridors of legend, his crew became synonymous with daring exploits, and his airship a breathtaking glimpse into the future.

“This is the tale of Corsair and the Sky Pirates, a gripping saga of adventure, rebellion, and the relentless pursuit of a brighter tomorrow. As the skies above echo with the whirring gears and billowing steam of magnificent airships, Corsair leads a daring crew against the oppressive forces of Edison’s corporate tyranny.

“Piggott’s spellbinding tale offers an action-packed plotline woven through with moral dilemmas that add interest and emotion to the book. At its heart, this is a story of good vs. evil with intricate world-building that features a diverse cast of characters sure to resonate with a wide range of readers. In addition, the book is packed with tension right from the start. Piggott’s concise writing creates powerful scenes, leading to an immersive reader experience. His creative use of real-world characters (Verne, Tesla, Edison, etc.) enhances the overall storyline to craft a compelling world readers won’t want to leave.

“A masterful book of steampunk fantasy perfect for any collector’s bookshelf, Corsair and the Sky Pirates explores the true meaning of how far one hero can go with the right friends at his side.”

The next review comes from a “brutally honest” book reviewer, Jennie Rosenblum. Jennie and I are from the same hometown of Phillipsburg, NJ, and have a mutual love for books—hers reading and mine writing. Jennie has always been honest in her reviews of my books and I always appreciate her support for the indie author community. She took the time over the Christmas holiday to read the next book in The Last Magus series, The Last Magus: Dragonfire and Steel.

“I could not wait to return to Gideon’s captivating world. It was pure delight as the familiar blend of adventure, magic, and vibrant characters filled the pages once more. In this installment of the series, Gideon starts by embarking on a compelling journey to the isolated city of Plodoro to fulfill his late master’s final wishes. And that’s just the beginning. He has to make it to the Helios competition and not only compete but win. Despite facing relentless moral dilemmas and external pressures, Gideon’s unwavering commitment to doing what’s right shines through.

“This series excels not only in its fantastical elements but also in its exploration of universal themes like duty, love, and the complexities of human (and sometimes non-human) nature. While each book stands on its own, offering a complete and immersive experience, the overarching narrative adds depth for returning readers. With its evocative storytelling and timeless moral resonance, Gideon’s saga continues to offer a captivating escape into a world of wonder and integrity.

“As always – the incredibly beautiful covers are the first draw!”

Adding Short Stories and Fan Fiction to the menu

I’ve had my Fan Fiction page up and running for some time now, but I decided to finally include some of my short stories in there. There are stories for contest that I’ve entered, some won, others did not, but I wanted to be able to share them with all of you.

These are stories that mean a lot to me and come from both my imagination and my heart. They were not just written for competition but rather inspired by a heartfelt twang. For example, I wrote The Clock Tower after my sister passed away two years ago. My niece took her death very hard, so I wanted to immortalize her in my writing. My sister loved Disney World so I turned her into a princess in her own magical kingdom. It’s an adventure in itself.

The Chalice came from a nightmare I had. I woke up one night after dreaming of being attacked by a witch in a dark alleyway. This was my first venture into horror, not something I’m used to writing, but I needed to do this to purge myself of this nightmare.

The last one, The Moonlit Black Cat Tavern, came from not only a dream but an idea. What if there were a place where monsters, humans, and demi-humans could come together and work out their differences? I worked from that idea into a fun like any Dungeons and Dragons campaign.

There’s also a link to all the fun Log Horizon anime fan fiction I wrote last year. I binged on the third season of that anime and it inspired me to write my own fan fiction based on the characters and story.

I will be adding new short stories as they come along so please take a look and read them. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them.

How much is too much for an indie author to spend on marketing? Beware of scammers!

One of the major hurdles an indie author must overcome is marketing. As an independent author, you don’t have the “Mad Men” at your beckon call to promote the heck out of your new book release. So, the question remains, how much is too much or is it not enough?

My inbox is filled with offers of marketing opportunities at reasonable prices to thousands of readers. Seems easy enough, but looks can be deceiving. A lot of these sites look the same and offer similar marketing schemes. I can’t say for sure whether or not they’re legitimate, but most of them find their way into my junk mail folder.

Social media is the easiest and cheapest way to garner a simple form of marketing. Ads on Facebook, IG, Twitter (or “X”) and other platforms can help but they still cost for clicks and link follows. And you need followers to monetize your posts. Mind you, there are scammers there too. “Gain 15,000+ followers!” Sorry, but never pay for what people claim is a sure thing. You’re bound to get trapped.

There are some easy ways to market, primarily through social media, but “BookTokkers” are a rising faction on TikTok. They read and review your books, sometimes just by sending them a copy. Others, like some “bookstagrammers” on IG want to be paid for reviews. I have done that initially but not anymore. I don’t mind sending a FREE copy of my book to someone who wants to read and review it, but I won’t pay for reviews. Sometimes, it seems like some of the reviewers are cutting and pasting comments from other reviews, not really reading the book. I don’t mind if a review is good or bad. Feedback helps me grow as an author.

I know that marketing is a subject I’ve talked about frequently, but it really does a number on indie authors. We are constantly taken advantage of by scammers trying to make an easy buck on desperate writers trying to make a name for themselves. I fell for more than one scammer in my 20+ years as an independent author. I am speaking from experience here. Don’t waste your money.

I’ve grown a simple following, a little over 5,000 on some platforms. I know some of those are probably “bots” but its nice to see people joining in the conversation. Mind you, it’s nothing to brag about but I’m still plugging away at it with daily posts and doing book signings, festivals and conventions. I could hire a marketing specialist to really plug away my books but that’s money I don’t have. I’m sure you don’t either.

Check out my Events link to keep track of all my book signing events or, if you can’t make it, head over to Buy My Books link to find the best deals online. You can follow me on all my social media for updates too! Thanks for your continued support!

Last days of summer for an indie author, plus a new short story contest from Ravens and Roses

Check out my Events page for updates on festivals and conventions I’ll be attending!

As the last days of Summer ebb into the blustery Autumn, the Corsair and the Sky Pirates book tour will be coming to an end. It has been a great year for my first steampunk historical fiction adventure! Finally, I wanted to make my fellow independent authors aware of a short story contest from Ravens and Roses Publishing. Last year, I entered their contest and my story, The Emissary, was selected for their anthology Tales Untold: Mythos Around the World. This year, their anthology theme this year is Underdogs of Society. They are accepting submissions for the anthology from July 1, 2023 – September 30, 2023. Unleash your creativity and do your best, but be original and creative in the story you deliver!

The maximum allowed word count per story is 8,000 words with a sweet spot between 5000-6,000 words. The short story must have a minimum word count of 3000 words. Visit the Anthology Guidelines page to learn more about submission criteria.

So, quick recap, plenty of chances to get a signed copy of my steampunk and fantasy books at conventions and festivals over the next few months. Check out my Events page for details. Plus, for indie authors and aspiring writers, check out the submission call for Ravens and Roses Publishing new anthology. Not much time left, so get writing!

Summertime Blues sometimes equals Writers Block

When the sun is high in the sky, the days are longer and the air is thick with humidity. All the while, the cool waters of the beach or swimming pool are calling you, what is a writer supposed to do? Sure, I can sit inside my air conditioned apartment and bang away at my keyboard, ignoring the possibilities of fun in the sun, but why? The oppressive heat and constant “air quality alerts” make going outside next to impossible. Still, it also makes it impossible to concentrate on writing.

Writer’s block is real! I’ve written maybe ten pages or less in the past month. It’s been hard to be inspired right now, especially after back surgery. It’s bad enough to sit behind my desk for my regular job, trying to keep moving to relieve pain in my back and legs. Then, sitting at night or on the weekends and writing is even harder. Plus, the heavy pain medications they have me on don’t help, either.

I’ve experienced writer’s block on more than one occasion. We are old friends and adversaries. We have dueled on the battlefield repeatedly, trading barbs and deleting poorly written sentences. Our conflicts have been bitter, nasty, and sometimes lasting for months or years. The struggle for The Dark Tides of 2012 still haunts me to this very day.

I still don’t have a cure for the evil of writer’s block. I’ve never been able to put it entirely behind me. All I can do is work through it or wait it out. Writer’s block is as unforgiving as a glacier moving through a chasm . . . slow and unrelenting. If you think about banging your head repeatedly into the wall, and never stop no matter how painful, that’s writer’s block.

All I can do is take it slow and work through the problems. I always say, “Writing a few sentences daily is progress in the right direction.” Keep doing that, and by the fall, I’ll have finished the chapter. Then, when cooler weather kicks in, and I’m feeling more like myself, with a pumpkin spice latte in hand, the words will start to flow again.

In the meantime, stay inside, and check out my Events page for upcoming book sales and conventions you can find me at.

  1. Click here to submit an interview featuring a character from your book of fiction for FREE. Honestly, I love reading interviews featuring the characters in a book and my blog followers do too. A link to your book page on Amazon will be included in the post
  2. Click here to submit an excerpt from your fiction or non-fiction book for FREE. I normally recommend about 300 – 500 words from your most engaging chapter to pique the interest of the reader. A link to your book page on Amazon will be included in the post

As both services are free, you have nothing to lose. I for one submitted my steampunk novel Corsair and the Sky Pirates for these author services. I can’t wait! Visit her website or follow her on Facebook to find out more about Segilola Salami! You can listen and subscribe to her podcasts on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
