60 years and this author is still going strong

I turn 60 years old next week . . . SIX ZERO. I am, by all accounts, a “boomer” born in 1963. I have lived through the Vietnam War, the Moon Landing, Watergate, the Iranian Hostage Crisis, MTV, the Cold War, the end of the Cold War, and so much more. As a U.S. Navy sailor, I’ve been hounded by Russians, crossed “the line of death” near Libya, fought through Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, 9/11, and NATO intervention in Bosnia.

I’ve seen the original Star Wars trilogy in theaters for the first time, saw Journey, Bryan Adams, and Kiss in concert, met Bob Hope, Charlie Daniels, and President Bill Clinton, gotten married, had three children, been to Disney World, Hawaii, and practically all around the world. All in all, it’s been an eventful life for this boomer. I have lived through a lot of ups and downs.

I have been a writer since high school in the 1970s, but I didn’t write my first full novel until 2001 and that wasn’t published until 2009. Since then, I have written and published several more books, signed with my first publisher (thank you Curious Corvid Publishing) and I have more books coming down the line. It has been a a roller coaster of a journey as an independent author and I want to celebrate my birthday with all of you by giving you a gift.

Thanks to my wonderful publisher Ravven White, Curious Corvid is offering a special deal on Monday, August 21. My two books, The River of Souls and Corsair and the Sky Pirates, have special deals all day long. On Amazon, you can buy the Kindle ebook for .99 cents. At the Curious Corvid Shop online, you can get 20% OFF a book (hardcover or paperback) or an ebook using the code RIVER or PIRATES, depending on which book you order. These special discounts are for ONE DAY ONLY so make it count.

And if you don’t take advantage of these incredible deals, don’t worry. You can catch me at the Fairfax Comic-Con, August 26-27, at the Dulles Expo Center in Fairfax, VA. It will be a great weekend for fans in the Northern Virginia/DMV area. Besides authors, artists, and vendors, there will be special guests including John Wesley Shipp (The Flash TV series) and WWE Hall of Famer Sgt. Slaughter. Visit www.fairfaxcomiccon.com for tickets and information.

And last but certainly not least, a WIP UPDATE . . . I am working on the edits to The Last Magus: Dragonfire and Steel as we speak. thanks to the graceful talents of book editor Anna Corbeaux (check out her website if you need a strong editor) I’ll have the sequel to The Last Magus: A Clockwork Heart ready for its December release. Plus, you will get the full COVER REVEAL in the next issue of the Magpie Messenger literary magazine from Curious Corvid Publishing. Once again, the cover was done by Anna Lena Spies and she really captured the true essence of Marcus Gideon and his journey as The Last Magus of Attlain. This cover will blow you away!

I hope you take advantage of my birthday deals and get yourself a copy of one of my amazing award-winning books. I hope you like them and, please remember, be kind to independent authors and leave a review. Good or bad, we need the support and feedback if we are to continue on this journey of writing. Thank you.

Last days of summer for an indie author, plus a new short story contest from Ravens and Roses

Check out my Events page for updates on festivals and conventions I’ll be attending!

As the last days of Summer ebb into the blustery Autumn, the Corsair and the Sky Pirates book tour will be coming to an end. It has been a great year for my first steampunk historical fiction adventure! Corsair has won with multiple awards from BookFest and Speak-Up Talk Radio, and recognized by my peers from BBYNA and Publishers Weekly BookLife for my novel. This marks a great end to 2023 with a few more Events lined up before the release of my next novel from Curious Corvid Publishing, The Last Magus: Dragonfire & Steel, coming this December.

First and foremost, you can find me in historic Williamsburg, VA, at 2nd Sundays – Arts and Music Festival through the end of 2023. These dates include August 13, September 10, and October 8. 2nd Sundays is a street fair of over 150 unique artisans, musicians, street performers and food vendors in six blocks of downtown Williamsburg along N Boundary Street from Richmond Rd to Lafayette Street, along Scotland from Armistead to N. Henry and in the 400 block of Prince George Street in Williamsburg, VA, on the 2nd Sunday of each Month (March- December)! Visit www.2ndsundayswilliamsburg.com for information about this monthly festival.

I also will be attending three comic-cons in the next two months, locally here in NORVA but also back in my hometown. The Fairfax Comic-Con is a two-day extravaganza, August 26-27, at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly VA. Besides exhibitors like yours truly, there will be an assortment of special guests including John Wesley Shipp (The Flash TV series), Susan Eisenberg (Wonder Woman in Justice League Animated Series) and more. Visit www.fairfaxcomiccon.com for tickets and information. The Phillipsburg Comic-Con is not a huge convention, but it is on my hometown of Phillipsburg, NJ, on Saturday, September 23. It supports my alma mater (Phillipsburg High School) arts programs through their Comic Club, Anime & Manga Club, and Club Unify. I am proud to be a part of this convention. Visit www.phillipsburgcomiccon.com for more information. Lastly, we round out September with the Southern Maryland Comic-Con on Saturday, September 30, at the Capital Clubhouse in Waldorf, MD. Southern Maryland Comic-Con is a celebration of comics, toys, TV, film, art, cosplay, games, and all things nerdy, which includes yours truly. Visit www.mdcomiccons.com for tickets and information.

Finally, I wanted to make my fellow independent authors aware of a short story contest from Ravens and Roses Publishing. Last year, I entered their contest and my story, The Emissary, was selected for their anthology Tales Untold: Mythos Around the World. This year, their anthology theme this year is Underdogs of Society. They are accepting submissions for the anthology from July 1, 2023 – September 30, 2023. Unleash your creativity and do your best, but be original and creative in the story you deliver!

The maximum allowed word count per story is 8,000 words with a sweet spot between 5000-6,000 words. The short story must have a minimum word count of 3000 words. Visit the Anthology Guidelines page to learn more about submission criteria.

So, quick recap, plenty of chances to get a signed copy of my steampunk and fantasy books at conventions and festivals over the next few months. Check out my Events page for details. Plus, for indie authors and aspiring writers, check out the submission call for Ravens and Roses Publishing new anthology. Not much time left, so get writing!

Independent authors seem to be a magnet for scams

Do I have sucker written across my face? It seems that way when my email inbox and DMs on many of my social media accounts are full of offers for more followers, better sales, and dazzling artwork. On top of that, I get regular phone calls for book marketing, pitches for Netflix and other streaming services (from the Philippines no less) and discounts on book publishing services.

Since I became a published author, I have found that we (as a community) are subjected to numerous scam artists. They see independent authors as easy pickings for these vultures. From marketing to artwork, beta readers, book publishers and editors, people are trying to make a quick buck on false promises of sales, followers, etc. I spend more time blocking people, reporting spam and junk mail, and cleaning out unnecessary emails to start my day. It’s a nightmare to contend with.

It’s a regular thing on Instagram. Instead of feedback or other comments on my posts, I get “PROMOTE IT ON” messages, pushing me to another marketing scam. Now, I’m getting follows from people with AUTHOR in their name but they promote marketing instead of talking about books. These scammers are changing their methods to make it easier to get at us.

Even artists are being used for scams. I have hired plenty of artists in my time, using their brilliant artwork to help promote my books on social media. I hired an artist to do work for my new book, Corsair and the Sky Pirates. I won’t mention their name because I am currently fighting them for a refund via PayPal Resolution. I asked them to do a drawing based on the images she provided as examples of her art. However, the final result was something akin to a middle school art project. Then, following a reverse Google search on the artwork she provided as “examples” to me, I discovered they belonged to someone else. That’s called fraud. It’s disingenuous and disgusting.

The emails are the worse. My inbox gets clogged with thousands of offers from what seems to be an endless stream of book promotion websites. It’s crazy as to how many different venues are being created on a daily basis to hoodwink independent authors desperate to generate sales. Some are trustworthy and worth it (BookBrush, AllAuthor, and IndieBookVault to name some I am involved with) but not most. It is a constant barrage of offers that’s insane.

I especially hate the phone calls. Someone from overseas with an unusual dialect wants to talk about promoting your book to Netflix producers and yet they don’t know a thing about you or your book. Plus, it’s always a “paid promotion” service, money up front, like Vanity Publishing. Never a good thing to grasp onto, and yet some desperate authors will fall for it.

So listen. If you find yourself being scammed, let the community know. We all need to support each other in stopping these fraudsters from using us to increase the size of their wallet. We have enough struggles with deadlines, writer’s block, editing and writing our stories. We don’t need any further aggravation.

Summertime Blues sometimes equals Writers Block

When the sun is high in the sky, the days are longer and the air is thick with humidity. All the while, the cool waters of the beach or swimming pool are calling you, what is a writer supposed to do? Sure, I can sit inside my air conditioned apartment and bang away at my keyboard, ignoring the possibilities of fun in the sun, but why? The oppressive heat and constant “air quality alerts” make going outside next to impossible. Still, it also makes it impossible to concentrate on writing.

Writer’s block is real! I’ve written maybe ten pages or less in the past month. It’s been hard to be inspired right now, especially after back surgery. It’s bad enough to sit behind my desk for my regular job, trying to keep moving to relieve pain in my back and legs. Then, sitting at night or on the weekends and writing is even harder. Plus, the heavy pain medications they have me on don’t help, either.

I’ve experienced writer’s block on more than one occasion. We are old friends and adversaries. We have dueled on the battlefield repeatedly, trading barbs and deleting poorly written sentences. Our conflicts have been bitter, nasty, and sometimes lasting for months or years. The struggle for The Dark Tides of 2012 still haunts me to this very day.

I still don’t have a cure for the evil of writer’s block. I’ve never been able to put it entirely behind me. All I can do is work through it or wait it out. Writer’s block is as unforgiving as a glacier moving through a chasm . . . slow and unrelenting. If you think about banging your head repeatedly into the wall, and never stop no matter how painful, that’s writer’s block.

All I can do is take it slow and work through the problems. I always say, “Writing a few sentences daily is progress in the right direction.” Keep doing that, and by the fall, I’ll have finished the chapter. Then, when cooler weather kicks in, and I’m feeling more like myself, with a pumpkin spice latte in hand, the words will start to flow again.

In the meantime, stay inside, and check out my Events page for upcoming book sales and conventions you can find me at.

Congratulations to Corsair and the Sky Pirates on another 2023 accolade from book bloggers

Congratulations are in order for my steampunk historical fiction Corsair and the Sky Pirates from Curious Corvid Publishing, nominated for the Book Bloggers Novel of the Year Award (#BBNYA2023)! BBNYA is an annual Indie book award hosted and judged completely by book bloggers!

BBNYA is a competition for indie authors (both self-published and published by small indie presses). Their goal is to give underappreciated, lesser-known authors a chance to gain some recognition without being overshadowed by the big names, but also show the world the power of book bloggers from all over the world! Sponsored by the Folio Society, the maker of beautiful illustrated collectible editions of the world’s great works of fiction and non-fiction.

To be honest, this came out of the blue. It suddenly popped up on my Twitter feed that I had been nominated. This is a great honor for me, Curious Corvid, and the artists and editors that helped bring Corsair to publication. I am humbled by all the love and support I continue to receive in my journey as an independent author.

Visit BBNYA to learn more about their awards program in association with The Write Reads and the Folio Society.

Here’s a critics review of Corsair and the Sky Pirates from Publisher’s Weekly BookLife

BookLife taps the experience, integrity, and authority of Publishers Weekly to help indie authors achieve their goals. BookLife is a website from Publishers Weekly dedicated to indie authors. The site provides a free and easy way to submit self-published books to Publishers Weekly for review, and offers editorial content—success stories, interviews, author profiles, how-to pieces, news, and features—geared toward helping indie authors achieve their goals. Whether an author is focused on writing and editing, art and design, or marketing and distribution, BookLife has valuable resources that can help along the way.

This is my second book to be reviewed by BookLife and I appreciate the support they give to independent authors like me. To have a powerhouse like Publisher’s Weekly behind this effort gives credence to struggling authors desperate to get their books some peer recognition.

So, here is the critics report from BookLife on my steampunk historical fiction Corsair and the Sky Pirates:

Plot/Idea: 8 out of 10

Originality: 7 out of 10

Prose: 9 out of 10

Character/Execution: 7 out of 10

Overall: 7.75 out of 10

Assessment:

Plot/Idea: Filled with harrowing airborne fights and classic steampunk action scenes, the plot of Corsair and the Sky Pirates at times takes a back seat to the physical fights and descriptions of the machines.

Prose: Crisp and engaging, the prose strikes a great balance between descriptions of the creative inventions that fill the pages and more action-packed scenes that move the plot forward.

Originality: This novel includes many staples of the sci-fi and steampunk genres while remaining innovative.

Character/Execution: The crew of the Galeru are a lovable, vibrant, rag-tag bunch that the reader will eagerly cheer for (and their notable diversity is an especially strong point). The novel may benefit from delving more deeply into their personal backstories and perspectives. More moments that allow readers to slip into the consciousness of characters would be appreciated.

Blurb: Piggott’s Corsair and the Sky Pirates is an action-packed, page-turning steampunk adventure that will appeal to fans of sci-fi and historical fiction.

BookLife Critics Report

I appreciate the sincerity and the honest criticism of their report. An honest review, whether good or bad, helps an author grow as a writer. I know it has certainly helped me. I highly recommend any independent or self-published author to check out BookLife for an independent and peer-driven review.

Sorry, I’ll be “out of service” for the next week

Sorry, but I’ll be out of service for the next week. Like an aging space cruiser, things break from time to time and need to be repaired. No, I don’t mean the website, but rather me personally. In case you didn’t know from my bio, I am a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Navy. I’m also a disabled veteran. When you’re over six feet tall and a Sailor, you find yourself bending over a lot to get around the ship. That caused plenty of back and neck issues for me. I had a back fusion at the end of my career on my lower back, now I have to have the same surgery on the area just above it.

So, the issue for me is the age and health difference. Back in 2006, I was relatively healthier and in my early 40’s. Now, I’m not in the best of health and turning 60 this year. Big difference. I have an excellent surgeon, the top orthopedic in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He did my wife’s back surgery last year so I am confident in that area.

I just wanted to let everyone know I’ll be offline for a few days, but keep me in your thoughts and prayers while I go through this ordeal. In the meantime, find a good book to read and relax. Can I make a book recommendation for you?

And be sure to check out my Events page to see where I’ll be in the coming months. My schedule is changing and updating on a regular basis, so STAY TUNED!

A myriad of book festivals and other events and how to choose which one is best for you

I always get asked this question by other indie authors . . . How do you find book stores and festivals open to do book signings? Well, a lot of it is just online searches, phone calls, and persistence. The events don’t come to you, you go to them. Sometimes it pays off with phenomenally great book sales and networking contacts, other times it’s a slap in the face as you get rejected. It’s a gamble that many independent authors like me have to go through.

First and foremost, start local! Hit your local area book stores, new and used books, discount booksellers, whomever you can find. Local stores love to promote their local authors so they will be amicable to letting you set up a table. Sometimes, they will take a cut, while others do it free and clear. Barnes and Noble do a lot to support local authors with book signings in store. Just find out who their event coordinator is and you can email them to inquire about an event. And if you have a hometown different from where you live, try there too. I’m originally from Phillipsburg, NJ, and I will doing a book signing at the Moravian Book Shop in Bethlehem, PA, on Saturday, June 3. It’s one of the closest book shops to my hometown and they have always supported me.

Next, find events within your genre! I am a steampunk and fantasy writer, so I trend toward steampunk festivals, renaissance fairs and comic-cons. A simple Google search will find you a compendium of festivals looking for vendors. The key is getting into the mix early. Some of these events have a juried selection for vendors, so getting in your application early helps. Also remember that travel may play a part in your selection. I try to stay within the Northern Virginia area, which is why I was able to get into the Tell-Tale Steampunk Festival in Baltimore, MD, the Ocean Renaissance Festival in Ocean City, MD, and Awesome-Con in Washington, DC. It’s not that far to travel and, in some cases, it’s a one day trip with no need for a hotel.

Now, last year I drove all the way up to Waltham, MA, for the Watch City Steampunk Festival, and I will admit it was a long drive for a great festival. I didn’t sell as many books to cover the cost of travel, hotel, food, etc., but it was an awesome event. There are plenty of festival and conventions like this that will require long travel on your part. It’s up to you as to whether or not it’s worth the trip.

Don’t forget to search for book festivals specifically! Although they can be far and few in-between from the regular fests and cons, there are plenty out there to support your indie authors. In Northern Virginia alone, there is the Imaginarium Book Festival in Washington, DC, the Gaithersburg Book Festival in Gaithersburg, MD, the Fredericksburg Independent Book Festival in Fredericksburg, MD, and the Williamsburg Book Festival in Williamsburg, VA. Now these events are often juried, meaning you have to send them your latest book to see if you fit into their event. I’ve been selected and not picked for some of these events, so be prepared. Sometimes, they have too many good authors to pick and choose from.

Last but not least, look outside the box! Don’t focus on book festivals, comic-con’s or other book-related events. Try anything and everything from craft fairs to music festivals. They all have vendors and having an author there is something different for that audience. Two years ago, I got turned on to 2nd Sundays Williamsburg in Williamsburg, VA. It’s a monthly arts and music festival held March-December in Colonial Williamsburg. I have my own spot and I set up there all the time. It’s a regular event for me where readers of my books (in the Hampton Roads area) can always find me to see what’s coming out next. Between my regulars and tourists, I have a steady stream of readers stop by my booth.

So, it is up to you to find that sweet spot of festivals, fairs, conventions, and book stores to sell you and your books to new readers. There is always someone looking for a new author or series to latch onto. It could be you, but you have to work for it. These things don’t just fall into your lap.

And be sure to check out my Events page to see where I’ll be in the coming months. My schedule is changing and updating on a regular basis, so STAY TUNED!

Segilola Salami presents “an interview with Corsair” from the award-winning Corsair and the Sky Pirates

As a writer or a reader, have you ever wanted to just talk to one of your favorite characters? Just the chance to sit and converse, not as part of the story but rather as something casual and informal to get to know them better. Well, I had the opportunity to do just that with Corsair, the infamous sky pirate captain from my award-winning steampunk historical fiction Corsair and the Sky Pirates thanks to Segilola Salami.

One of the many services she offers to independent authors is to post a one-on-one interview with a character from your book. This allowed me to further delve into the mind of my dashing yet mysterious sky pirate. You can read the whole interview HERE.

I’ve had the great opportunity to work with blogger, podcaster, and all around bookworm Segilola Salami over the past few years. She is a great supporter of independent authors like me, helping them talk about their books, WIPs, or just about their career as a writer and author. Check out the links below to see the range of services (both paid services and FREE) that she offers that might be suitable for your marketing needs:
